Rum Wissen

Did you know?

The first distillation of rum occurred in the 1620s when Caribbean sugar plantation slaves discovered that molasses, a by-product of sugar refining, could be fermented into alcohol.

The word rum... is probably derived from the English dialect word rumbullion for "riot" and "tumult".

Rum is made from... the molasses of the raw sugar, not from the sugar cane juice as many people think. Molasses is a chewy, dark brown sugar syrup. However, a small part of the rum production is made from freshly squeezed sugar cane juice. The name for this type of rum comes from the French overseas territories and is called Rhum Agricole.

The word Meleasse... comes from the late Latin "mellacium" and means "thickened wine, cider syrup" and "mel" for honey.

What is the minimum alcohol content in rum? Rum always has a minimum alcohol content of 37.5 percent. Pampero Ru, for example, is made with water from the in-house spring. Without the spring water, the rum distillate would have an alcohol content of 65 to 75 percent.

What about white rum? White rum is either stored in steel casks or, like Pampero Blanco, is charcoal filtered after aging in wooden casks. This removes strong wood notes and gives it its fresh and fruity taste.

Rum not just for drinking? In the 19th century, rum was valued as a beauty product for its ability to cleanse hair and strengthen its roots. Today we know that it is not true.

Maturation and rum. Good taste takes time: the rum matures for 18 months in oak barrels, similar to whiskey. Rum must be stored in oak barrels for at least 3 years in order to be called "old rum".

07

Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum Solera 5

Herkunft: Mauritius

Alcohol content: 40%

Mauritius, the small island in the Indian Ocean, is known for its dream beaches. But what many people don't know is that some of the highest quality rums in the world are made here. Occupied by the French in the 18th century, they soon introduced sugar cane as the climate was perfect for growing this crop. Gradually, the resulting molasses began to be fermented and sent through a distillation plant - this is how the first rums on the island were created. Today the company Litchquor Ltd. in the Grays Distillery produces a premium rum made from molasses and freshly squeezed juice, the Gold of Mauritius. It is a blend of three different rums aged for one, four and five years in the Solera system. This rum then also matures in port wine casks for six to eight months, which gives it a particularly aromatic character. Sweet and fruity on the nose. Spicy on the palate, with lots of chocolate, coffee, caramel and vanilla. Departure long and aromatic.

08

Bumbu XO The Craft Rum

Origin: Caribbean

Alcohol content: 40%

With this sugar cane liquor, no more flavors are added afterwards. In addition, the spirit is created in Panama and is distributed by the Sovereign Brands Wine & Spirits Company from New York. Following distillation, the Bumbu XO Rum is aged in American white oak casks for up to 18 years and is finished in sherry casks. This gives it notes of toffee, toasted oak, vanilla, orange zest, spicy pepper and a little bit of coffee. The rum is filled into a black, heavy bottle, which is closed with a natural cork and is inevitably reminiscent of the time of pirates and sailors.

09

Mount Gay XO

Origin: Barbados

Alcohol content: 43%

Mount Gay Distillery is a rum distillery in Barbados, Caribbean. It has been proven that Mount Gay has been produced since 1703, which is why many speak of the oldest and finest rum in the world. Depending on the variety, Mount Gay is aged for two to twelve years in oak barrels purchased from the Jim Beam whiskey distillery. The name derives from the fact that the rum's sugar cane growing area is located on a hill called Mount Gay in the St. Lucy area of northern Barbados. This rum has the perfect balance of ripe banana and toast followed by vanilla, pastry and warm spices. The taste is opulent, fruity and spicy.

10

Rum Brugal 1888

Origin: Dominican Republic

Alcohol content: 40%

This rum has a long tradition. Spanish migrant Don Andres Brugal Montaner founded Brugal & Co in 1888 in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. The name of the city, Puerto Plata, means silver port. Located by the sea in the north of the Dominican Republic, it is the country's most important port with 130,000 inhabitants. Sugar cane for rum production is grown in the east of the vegetation-rich landscape. This premium rum was double distilled and rested in American oak casks for many years before being finished in Spanish sherry casks. Exotic fruits stand out on the nose: dates, raisins paired with wonderful roasted aromas, coffee, cocoa, vanilla and dark chocolate. The taste shows a sweet side like butterscotch or toffee, but nuts and spicy notes like cinnamon can also be found in it. The finish warming and long.

11

Le Chat Premium Rum

Herkunft: Schweiz

Alcohol content: 40%

LeCHat Rum is made in Switzerland using the traditional Häfelibrand process. This distilling method retains the natural aromas that develop during the distillation process in the distillate and therefore produces extremely complex and aromatic products. It is thanks to the master distiller that only the “heart of the distillate” finds its way into the barrels. Le Chat is characterized by a mix of vanilla, forest honey, tobacco and fresh wood. Rum-typical notes of sugar cane juice and dark molasses are harmoniously integrated into this variety of tastes. The finish captivates with a wood-spicy infinity accompanied by honey.

Alcohol content: 40%

Gran Reserva 23 is an ultra-premium rum that will satisfy even the most demanding palate. It is characterized by its golden, deep hue and by its unique taste and unmistakable character. In the mouth it turns out to be a very fine, elegant and creamy rum with a base of liquorice with nuances of toasted almonds and hazelnuts. It is very complex and has fresh sensations, including fruit flavors. It becomes increasingly sophisticated and ends with a final touch that makes us think of sherry.

24

Banqero Copper Swiss Premium Rum

Herkunft: Schweiz

Alcohol content: 40%
