grappa knowledge

Did you know?

It is assumed that in Veneto and Friuli a schnapps was distilled from pressed grapes and seeds for the first time. However, there is no concrete "Grappa birthplace". From time to time one can read that Monte Grappa in Veneto and the little town of Bassano del Grappa lying at its feet are the true homeland of grappa. But this is nothing more than a "crazy idea".

The name Grappa derives from the Latin "rapus" for grape and the Italian word for grape "grappolo". In the northern Italian dialects this became "gràpo", "rappe" or "graspa".

Grappa ist ein Tresterbrand aus...

Italien.

More about pomace... The pomace (Träber, Treber, Lauer) consists of berry skins (approx. 50%), pips (approx. 25%) and combs (approx. 25%) that remain after the wine has been pressed. The pomace is very aromatic and contains alcohol, fructose, oils, aromas, flavors, cream of tartar, minerals, polyphenols, active ingredients and organic matter.

How to drink grappa properly. In Italy, pomace brandy is traditionally served as a digestif, pure, from a grappa glass and slightly chilled. A grappa glass has a thick belly and then a long opening that tapers towards the top. This allows you to take in the pleasant aromas of the spirit with your nose.

Guidelines for grappa? Only pomace distillates produced in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland and in Italy may be called Grappa. This is referred to as a geographical protection designation. This is why the term "Marc" has become established for comparable pomace brandies in France, other fine distilleries such as Macardo call their pomace spirits "Aquavite di vinaccia", in English "pomace brandy".

Production is strictly regulated. For example, no more than 2% sugar may be added to the pomace brandy. In addition, neither dyes nor other herbal ingredients may be used for flavoring or coloring.
